The Greek Square or Greek Cross Quilt Block Tutorial: Easy, Fast, and Versatile
The Greek Square quilt block, also known as the Greek Cross, Grecian Square or Grecian Design, is a timeless and easy-to-sew block that’s perfect for quilters of all skill levels. Constructed using only squares, rectangles, and half-square triangles, this variation of the classic Churn Dash block comes together quickly and offers several eye-catching design possibilities.
The Greek Square block has been attributed to several publications/designers in the past such as Ladies Art Company, Woman's World, and Nancy Cabot. In this tutorial, I’ll guide you step by step through piecing this versatile block and explore a variety of layout options to inspire your next quilt project.

Half Square Triangles:
Step 1:
Using the Light 5" squares and the Blue 5" squares, make Half Square Triangle (HST) units as shown. Here are the first steps corresponding to the images in the picture below.
- Match up a White square and a Blue square right sides together. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the White square and sew 1/4" (or a little less) on each side of the line.
- Cut along the diagonal line. You will have 2 half-square triangle patches.

Step 2:
- Open up the patch and press the seam allowance toward the Blue fabric.
- Square up/trim the units to 4.5" square.
- You can find my tutorial for making HST units at https://fabric406.com/blogs/fabric406-blog/how-to-sew-a-basic-half-square-triangle-block

Step 3:
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for a total of four HST units.
