Grandmother's Own Quilt Layouts and Yardage

By: Elaine Huff

My last block tutorial was for the Grandmother's Own quilt block and I had some requests for layouts and yardage for quilts so here you go!

Throw Size (60" x 60") Quilt

Yardage

  • Light/White: 3/8 yard
  • Medium/Plum: 2+1/4 yards
  • Dark/Navy: 1+5/8 yards

The layout shown below uses 12" finished blocks set in a 4 x 4 layout with a 2" inner border and a 4" outer border. I've only used 2 colors in this layout and I was totally surprised that where the blocks come together they make the same design as the original block! I should've realized it ahead of time but didn't.

Queen Size (96" x 108") Quilt

Yardage

  • Light/White: 1 yard
  • Medium/Blue: 5+7/8 yards
  • Dark/Navy: 4+3/8 yards

The layout shown below uses 12" finished blocks set in a 7 x 8 layout. I've also used only 2 colors in this example with a 2" inner border and 4" outer border.

Small Throw, Baby or Lap (44" x 44") Quilt

Yardage

  • Light/White: 1 fat quarter
  • Medium/Blue (middle border): 3/8 yard
  • Dark/Navy: 1+1/4 yard
  • Assorted Medium Prints: 1 fat quarter each of 8 different fabrics

In this example I've set the 12" blocks in a 3 x 3 layout with a 1" inner border, a 2" middle border, and a 1" outer border. As you can see, it is a scrappy quilt and so the secondary cross design isn't as pronounced as in the two other examples. It is still pleasing to the eye and would be a good way to use up scraps or extra fat quarters you have! It's my favorite but I'm partial to scrappy quilts!
